Information on Traffic Violations, Citations and Speeding Tickets in Pennsylvania
Will Your License be Suspended?
What Happens if You Get Too Many Points on Your Driver’s License?
Pennsylvania is one of the toughest States on drivers in the U.S. with many laws, strict penalties and a large governmental bureaucracy for managing drivers, their licenses and their rights.
If you have received any traffic law violations or traffic citations, you have probably also started accumulating points on your driving record, which can lead to license suspension in Pennsylvania, not to mention increasing your insurance premiums.
Simply paying the fines or accepting the consequences can lead to even bigger consequences down the road if you happen to have an accident or another traffic violation. More severe consequences could include jail time, the inability to get a student loan or a long-term license suspension.
Fortunately, there are alternatives and a legal system that is here to protect your rights and your future.

The PennDOT Point System for Traffic Violations
Whether you have had a speeding ticket, passed a vehicle in no passing zone, or failed to make a complete stop at a stop sign, you have accumulated points on your license. Each violation, and the gravity of that violation will determine how many points you receive.
If you are unsure as to whether or not your license has been suspended, you may contact PennDOT at 1-800-932-4600 or use their online driver services website.
How many points does it take to have a Pennsylvania license revoked?
With only six points on your driving record, you are forced to take a written point examination at the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in order to keep your license from being revoked. Having any points on your driving record puts you at risk for having your license suspended, not to mention it will increase your car insurance premiums.
If you accumulate another six points (even after those first six points have been reduced) you will have to attend a Departmental Hearing at PennDOT. At the hearing, it will be determined as to whether or not you will have your license suspended for 15 days.
If you accumulate another six points for the third or subsequent time, you will have to attend a Departmental Hearing at PennDOT and will be at risk for losing your license for 30 days.

What happens if I have an excessive speeding violation in Pennsylvania?
If you have an excessive speeding violation, (over 31 miles per hour or more over the speed limit) you are required to attend a Departmental Hearing at PennDOT and may lose your license for 15 days.
For more information on the point system, read PennDOT’s point system fact sheet.
What can I do to avoid paying heavy fines and insurance premiums and possibly losing my license?
It is important to remember that just because you have had your license suspended, revoked or have accumulated points, you still have a right to take action and fight to keep your license and have the points removed from your driving record. With legal help, it is possible to have these points removed and your license reinstated.
Please note: If you have received a written notice that your license will be suspended, you only have 30 days to make an appeal. Call our offices immediately for a free consultation and we will help you retain your right to drive.
